Elgin Area Leadership Academy

An award winning program of the Elgin Area Chamber of CommerceElgin Leadership Academy

The award winning Elgin Area Leadership Academy is an experience for people like you who want to make the Elgin area an even better community. The program crafts and delivers a curriculum specifically designed to assist individuals in becoming an active and inspiring contributor to their community.

The program offerings feature distinguished community leaders, content experts and successful executives in the Elgin area sharing their ideas, perspectives and experiences. Programs provide opportunities to develop and leverage a strong professional network of future and current Elgin leaders in all industry types.

The curriculum focuses on the following topical areas:

  1. A historical perspective of the City of Elgin
  2. A wide-ranging view of architectural, residential, cultural, economic and religious diversity of Elgin
  3. Communication, problem solving, mutual support, team goals and the group process
  4. An introduction to public and private education in Elgin
  5. Business and industry, development opportunities, employment issues and, its relationship with the city government
  6. A review of leadership principles
  7. A meet and greet with Elgin's "movers and shakers"
  8. Examination and understanding of the diverse population of Elgin

Don and DanThe Academy is led by Mr. Dan Fox (right) and Dr. Don Waters (left).

DAN FOX, M.A. Dan is a graduate of Southern Illinois University and Northeastern Illinois University with an emphasis in government and political science. He taught social studies for 33 years at Conant High School where he coached and, in 1973, initiated one of the first mandatory student community service programs in Illinois. He served eight years on the Elgin City Council, was President of the Elgin Literacy Connection and served on the Elgin Planning and Development Commission. Dan is serving on the Board of PADS of Elgin and is a co-founder and co-facilitator of the award winning Elgin Area Leadership Academy, now in its fifteenth year.


DON WATERS, Ed.D. Don is a graduate of Ball State University and the University of Missouri-Columbia with an emphasis in administration of higher education and counseling. He has had extensive experience in leadership development and organizational planning. He was Vice President of Elgin Community College and a high school guidance counselor. He was President of the National Council for Resource Development and the President of the Illinois Council for Resource Development. In the community, he has served on the Elgin City Council for seven years, was President of the Elgin Kiwanis Club, Vice President of United Way Board and President of the Golden Corridor Economic Development Council. He also was a co-founder and is currently co-facilitator of the Elgin Leadership Academy.

The Elgin Area Chamber is recognized as a professional and business leader in Elgin area and has won numerous awards and recognitions. The infrastructure of the Elgin Leadership Academy creates the perfect environment for your development as a community leader.
