Winergy Drive Systems and Siemens Drive Technologies in Elgin have been awarded an EDIE (Economic Development in Illinois) Award by the Illinois Chamber of Commerce and the Illinois Development Council (IDC) recognizing their significant economic development project finished last year.
“Siemens presence in Elgin has been extremely positive,” said Elgin Mayor Ed Schock. “The company is bringing hundreds of needed jobs to the area which will also help build a healthy and dynamic regional economy.”
Elgin Area Chamber president Leo Nelson said Siemens remaining in Elgin and expanding with a new 170,000-square-foot, LEED-certified plant that assembles and tests mechanical gears used in wind turbines “is a testament to the importance of economic development in Elgin. The Elgin Area Chamber, City of Elgin and the state's Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity worked closely with Siemens, a global corporation, to stay and grow here in Elgin.”
“Sustainable economic development is critical to Elgin’s growth,” said Elgin City Manager Sean Stegall. “Siemens has contributed to our community’s economic success with the expansion that helped retain 142 jobs, and will create 350 new jobs over the next 2-3 years” in the burgeoning wind industry.”
The Edie Awards have up to fifteen categories based on geography (City of Chicago, Metropolitan Chicago or statewide projects) and development type: manufacturing, commercial, energy, technology and transportation/distribution. Siemens is one of six projects receiving an EDIE, which was formally presented at the Illinois Chamber’s annual meeting in Chicago on June 18.
