Recreation

More than 1,200 acres of well-equipped parks are designed to satisfy individual and family recreation desires. There are also 4,000 acres of Kane and Cook County forest preserves offering canoeing, fishing, and equestrian trails. Residents have immediate access to the Fox River Trail and the Illinois Prairie Path, numerous golf courses, wintertime skiing and ice skating, swimming and boating and a wondrous array of sports and other recreational activities and events.

Elgin's Parks and Recreation Department conducts an elaborate calendar of organized sports, recreation, and special interest activities for residents of all ages. The Parks & Recreation Department works with the Northern Illinois Special Recreation Association (NISRA) to provide recreational opportunities for residents with disabilities.

Elgin's new downtown state-of-the-art 200,000 square foot family recreation facility, The Centre of Elgin features:

The City of Elgin operates the 307-acre Elgin Sports Complex. The complex includes:

  • Ten lighted softball diamonds
  • BMX track - "The Hill"
  • Professional-grade soccer fields
  • Two sand volleyball courts

Adjacent to the Sports Complex is the 18-hole Highlands of Elgin Golf Course. Designed by renowned golf course architect Keith Foster, The Highlands represent his artistic impression of the game’s origins in Scotland. Play amidst the rolling hills, expansive fairways and undulating greens as you appreciate the challenge, beauty and pleasure of the game.

Lords Park rest on 111 acres. The park is home to the Lords Park Pavilion, a grand, multipurpose building that was dedicated to the city in 1898. Recently restored, the building is available for weddings, parties, and business and social meetings.

Wing Park, with 121 acres, boasts:

  • Nine-hole golf course
  • Aquatic center
  • Bike path
  • Tennis courts
  • Ball fields
  • Picnic shelters
  • Play area
  • Band shell.

For golfers, the area's three country clubs – Elgin Country Club, Rolling Knolls Country Club, and Villa Olivia Country Club – each offer 18 challenging holes, fine dining, and other amenities. In winter, Villa Olivia offers skiing, tubing and snowboarding.
