• Water Systems Operator

    The Village of South Elgin is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of a Certified Water Systems Operator.  This position, under general supervision of the Water Superintendent, is responsible for leading and coordinating the work required to operate, maintain, construct and replace components of the water supply, pumping, storage and distribution systems as well as the sanitary sewer collection system. 
     
    Essential Job Functions

    1. Operate, inspect, maintain and repair the water distribution system including mains, pressure reducing valves, water taps, service lines and fire hydrants.

    2. Maintain, repair and build sanitary sewers and sump pump mains.

    3. Maintain and inspect sanitary distribution system using sewer jet, vacuum trucks, and other related items.  Repair sanitary lines when blockage occurs and inspect and maintain trunk sewer lines, manholes, river/creek basins and other related areas.  Restore yards and fences.  Replace or repair catch basins, culverts, retaining walls and broken drainage pipes.

    4. Operate, inspect, maintain, repair, and build components on the supply pumping and storage system, include chemical handling, pumping equipment, electrical, and building maintenance.

    5. Collect samples and perform tests for water quality analysis.

    6. Respond to emergency situations such as snow removal, etc. and support other Village departments/divisions in the abatement of emergency situations.

    7. Assist the Superintendent in planning and coordinating utility system repair and           replacement program in conjunction with the street maintenance programs.  
       

    Basic Requirements
     For successful performance in this position, the incumbent will need to demonstrate the following:

    1. Extensive knowledge of water supply, pumping, storage, and distribution systems and associated maintenance and repair methods, procedures and techniques.

    2. Extensive knowledge of sewer maintenance and repair methods, procedures and techniques.

    3. Extensive knowledge of the operation and maintenance of all pertinent machinery, equipment and tools.

    4. Thorough knowledge of potential hazards and correlative safety measures and precautions including knowledge of IDOL, OSHA, and IDOT standards.

    5. Working knowledge of computer software programming, including SCADA Systems and GIS Systems.

    6. Ability to work in confined spaces. 

    7. Ability to see and accurately read fine print in low lighting conditions such as gauges.

    8. Ability and willingness to respond to emergencies twenty-four (24)-hours a day, seven (7) days a week and carry a wireless communication device.

    9. Possession of valid CDL Class A driver’s license, with tanker and hazmat endorsements. 
       

    Education and Experience

    1.  High school diploma or equivalent.

    2. Minimum ten (10) years of experience in potable water supply, pumping and storage activities, and sanitary sewer collection systems.

    3. Minimum of two (2) years supervisory experience is desired.

    4. Possession of an Illinois Class B Water Operators Certification issued by the Illinois EPA.

    5. Possession of an IEPA Cross Connection Device Inspector Certification.

    6. Proficiency in the following equipment:  backhoe, excavator, vactor, tractor, dump truck and loader.

    7. Any equivalent combination of experience and education that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
       

    Physical / Environmental Demands

    Extensive physical activity performing strenuous daily activity at loud to very loud noise levels in an outdoors environment exposed to changing conditions such as extreme heat and cold, high winds, rain or snowstorms, flood conditions, etc.   Involves lifting, moving and replacing heavy objects and using heavy tools and/or equipment weighing up to 80 pounds, such as manhole covers, sacks of cement, gravel, jackhammers, etc.
     
    Normal work hours for this position are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.  The Village offers an excellent compensation and benefit package with a starting salary range of $70,907 - $88,899.
