    About the Foundation
    Grand Victoria Foundation, with offices in Chicago and Elgin, is a private foundation that annually awards upwards of $7M in grants and other support. The Foundation has new leadership and team members, and a new  mission, vision and strategy to focus our philanthropy more deeply on supporting community-driven solutions to persistent challenges. Our vision is a strong, livable and equitable Illinois where every resident has an opportunity to thrive. 

    Our grantmaking focuses on creating change for and with communities closest to the need, with a goal to achieve equitable outcomes that reduce disparities and ensure fair access to resources in our areas of interest.

    Our grantmaking approach will:

    Develop and nurture individual leadership;
    Build and sustain strong and effective organizations; 
    Support the development and execution of new ideas to address long standing systemic challenges; and,
    Encourage and uplift civic engagement
    The Director of Equity will build the capacity necessary to support people-centered and community driven change throughout our state. With a lens focused on racial and economic equity, they will also help us identify and support community leaders whose voices and ideas have been underrepresented in regional and state-wide conversations.  

    The Foundation seeks candidates who are deeply invested in pursuing equitable and community-based strategies to bring about systemic changes throughout the state. We also are looking for candidates who are excited about helping us foster racial and economic equity across all of our programs and build a strong organizational culture that is aligned with our values, mission and vision.

    The Role 

    The Director will help facilitate dialogue and networks with civic and equity leaders and organizations across the state to gain a better understanding of regional challenges and opportunities. The Director’s work will also complement and influence the Foundation’s current work in the areas of education, the environment and the economy.

     If this work is done successfully, examples of anticipated outcomes are: 

    Innovative, community-led, equitable and people-centered ideas with systemic potential are supported
    Promotion and execution of civil discourse leads to increases in community engagement and civic participation and knowledge of racial equity and justice practices
    The adoption of new policies and practices that result in increased racial and economic equity, designed by those disproportionately impacted by inequitable ones
    A statewide place-based civic engagement initiative that incorporates a participatory grantmaking approach is created and sustained 
    The strongest candidates for the Director of Equity will be able to demonstrate their ability to thrive in the organization’s emerging work norms: 

    Purpose-driven: Grounded in the work, aware of the impact that is possible, and able to purposely engage and collaborate with others internally and externally to move the work forward 
    Innovation: Able and eager to identify new opportunities, strategies and approaches to philanthropy within and outside of traditional systems and structures 
    Entrepreneurialism: Able to grow the Foundation’s education work and establish our identity in the field throughout the state 
    Ideas and inquiry: Generate ideas, then test those ideas internally and externally to establish original methods and points of view 
    Comfort with ambiguity: Possess the confidence and flexibility to successfully work in an environment where experimentation is encouraged 

    The primary goals for the Director of Equity are:

    Ensure that GVF's grantmaking policies and practices incorporate and keep the Foundation accountable to equity values, via the improvement of grant application and reporting tools and aligning data collection and analysis;
    Build a portfolio of work that encourages and supports racially and economically diverse grantees who adopt equity principles and practices, and spur programs and public policies that reduce racial and economic disparities 
    Build the Foundation’s capacity to assess and analyze civic/community engagement and equity challenges and opportunities throughout the state;
    Create and lead community conversations across the state to understand regional challenges, and connect communities with each other for partnership and info sharing
    Identify and support organizations led by people of color, and help further their capacity (through trainings and other activities) to shape conditions and create and scale solutions that are grounded in local context (emphasis on organizations outside of metro Chicago) 
    Support internal efforts to build a strong organizational culture at the Foundation that is rooted in equity and inclusion and aligned with our values and vision 
    Skills and Characteristics Candidates for this role will have a strong commitment to racial equity and justice. The most competitive people for this role will have many of the following skills and/or characteristics: 

    Direct and progressively responsible experience leading equity and justice, civic or community engagement efforts
    Understanding of policies impacting communities of color, including knowledge of legislation and policy advocacy
    Experience using and analyzing data (qualitative and quantitative) for the purpose of capacity building and/or systems/policy change
    Experience facilitating, collaborating and leading through difference among multiple parties, and designing and leading meetings to build consensus on problems and their solutions 
    Ability to manage up and across the Foundation to effectively engage colleagues and to keep important initiatives and programs moving forward 
    Strategic, analytical problem solver, who understands inequities and injustices in Illinois and identifies and leverages resources to advance grantmaking 

    A belief in the Foundation’s mission, vision and theory of change 
    Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree is a plus
    At least 5 years of progressively responsible leadership experience with racial equity and/or justice , civic or community engagement, or related work
     Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and databases 
    Ability to travel, when appropriate, throughout Illinois.
