    Elgin commissions two new public art pieces: Pending final approval by City Council (at press date), the City of Elgin will set aside $15,000 of its 2017 budget to commission two new public art pieces in downtown Elgin this fall. A new mural will be placed on a blank concrete wall on the southeast side of The Hemmens while a new sculpture would be placed along the Riverside Drive Promenade. The chosen projects will be unveiled by the Cultural Arts Commission at the annual Art Harvest in October.

    Cosmo Club names Distinguished Service Award winner: Jeff Turner was chosen as the recipient of the 75th Elgin Cosmopolitan Club Distinguished Service Award based on outstanding contributions to the community. Turner, owner of In the Neighborhood Deli, has been instrumental in starting Elgin's annual community dinner program.

    EPD Explorers excel: Congratulations to Elgin Police Department Explorer Post 1445, who recently competed in Rockford and took second place in Crime Prevention and Arrest and Search and fourth place in Traffic Stops. Individually they also took second place in push-ups and the mile run, and third place in sit-ups. The Explorer Program enhances the relationship between the police department and youth residing in Elgin and surrounding communities.

    Explore 2017: The Alignment Collaborative Educational Pathways A-Team in partnership with School District U-46 & Citizen’s Advisory Council will host Explore 2017: A U-46 Community, Curriculum & Career Expo on Saturday, October 14 at Elgin Community College. Participating organizations will have the opportunity to showcase their products and services to the community by utilizing interactive hands-on demonstrations and/or engaging displays to attract students’ attention and start conversations about a career.     Elgin 4th of July Parade: The annual City of Elgin 4th of July Parade steps off at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 4 at Slade and Douglas and ends at Highland and Douglas.
