ESL Child Education & Family Literacy
ESL Child Education & Family Literacy classes have been very busy painting fall pictures, making beautiful googly-eyed turkeys and discussing kindness, what we are thankful for, and how animals preparing for hibernation.
The YWCA ESL Child Education Teachers have partnered with Elgin Partnership for Early Learning (EPEL), to provide storytimes at the JetXpress and Blue Kangaroo laundromats in Elgin. During the laundromat storytimes, our bi-lingual teachers engage the children by reading books to them, guiding them through art projects, helping them complete puzzles, and leading other hands-on activities. The teachers also pass out flyers for the YWCA Elgin's English as a Second Language and Family Literacy classes to encourage new students to register.
For more information about registering for English as a Second Language or Family Literacy classes, email email@example.com and follow the YWCA Elgin on social media.

NEW!!! Junior Marketing Committee
YWCA Elgin Take 2 Creative Camp Director and Marketing Assistant, Korisa Madayag, saw a need and filled it, in a very creative way. The YWCA Elgin Marketing Department was in desperate need of help and the Take 2 Creative Camp teens were requesting a year-round program. Korisa made the connection and proposed that the YWCA Elgin's first-ever Junior Marketing Committee be formed. She then created a program outline and selected a group of Take 2 Creative Camp students, based on their Take 2 performance, to be on the new committee. In addition to being helpful to the YWCA Elgin, the committee also serves as a workforce development program for its members. This committee will grow their skills, give them the tools they need to succeed in the marketing industry, and granting them experience in a professional setting; the volunteer work also will look great on their college application and resumes.
The new committee meets weekly to help our marketing department by providing videography, photography, and other marketing materials. In the 2 months since the creation of this committee, they have already completed 3 major projects, one of which was a music video for YWCA Week Without Violence. The students are currently working on creating content for our #GivingTuesday fundraising campaign and we can't wait to see what they come up with! Once this committee is more established, they plan to offer their services to other organizations in the Elgin area.

Happy Birthday YWCA Elgin
On November 8th, we observed our 120th anniversary. As we celebrated, we took a moment to look back over the past 120 years and acknowledge our accomplishments. Since 1901, we have made it our mission to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. As advocates and catalysts for change, we have worked to build a united community; and increase racial harmony and safety. We have also helped women and their families acquire the skills and resources necessary to build self-sufficient and prosperous lives. We are incredibly proud of our work in the community and look forward to what the next 120 years will bring.

The YWCA Elgin is committed to standing up for social justice issues. To achieve racial justice within the organization, the YWCA Elgin Board of Directors is undergoing racial equity training to understand the role race and racism impacts individuals and organizational practices that adversely affect Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC). The five-week training offered since October 2021 highlights common language, historical causes, implicit biases, define policies and practices to achieve racial justice.
While conversations about race and racism are at the forefront of America today, the YWCA Elgin Board of Directors has come to the table with a spirit of openness to accomplish the desired future state of the YWCA Elgin to be a racially just and equitable organization.
The YWCA Elgin is partnering with the All of Us Research Program, which is the largest research program aimed to help researchers understand more about why people get sick or stay healthy. The key to the program is diversity. Diversity strengthens the science. Having one million or more participants from all walks of life will create a diverse, large data set. This will allow researchers to make discoveries that wouldn't be visible with fewer people.
If you join, you will be contributing to research that may improve health for everyone.
